Dewey Murdick to Speak on AI

At fourth annual Robert & Lillis Kingman Lecture Series

Dewey Murdick, PhD, is the plenary speaker for the fourth annual Robert & Lillis Kingman Lecture Series on Science and Society. Murdick’s lecture will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, from 7:30–9 p.m. at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the campus of Andrews University.

In his presentation titled "Understanding Tomorrow Today: Artificial Intelligence's Impact on Society," Murdick will explore the implications of cutting-edge AI, delve into the global challenges it presents, and shed light on ongoing technology-policy debates. The presentation will provide insights into how individuals can take personal ownership and exercise agency to positively shape our rapidly evolving world.

Murdick, who holds a PhD in engineering physics from the University of Virginia and a BS in physics from Andrews University, is at the forefront of conversations on AI and its influence on society. He is the executive director at Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), and he advises the OECD Network of Experts on AI (ONE AI) and the National Network for Critical Technology Assessment. Formerly, he worked as the director of Science Analytics at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, where he oversaw metric creation, data science and machine learning programs. He has also held important positions within the Department of Homeland Security, including chief analytics officer and deputy chief scientist.

Murdick has also worked with Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), where he co-founded an office in anticipatory intelligence and led high-risk, high-reward research in support of national security tasks. Furthermore, his varied professional background includes employment in intelligence analysis, research, software development and contract teaching.

The Robert and Lillis Kingman Lecture Series on Science and Society is open to the public. Refreshments will be provided, allowing guests to engage in discussions and network with other participants.
